How good of an 'investment' is an Omega watch?

Ok, before I begin let me say this - I only own two watches (both Rolex). And I have no intention of ever sellling them. For me, they are somewhat of an heirloom (or will be) for my kids to fight over when I kick it. That is, buying a timepiece for me is like adopting an animal from the shelter. It's a lifetime commitment.

That being said, a part of me likes the notion that if the crap hit the fan and I was strapped financially I could liquidate my watches fairly quickly at a decent price. I'm looking at possibly buying an Omega and was wondering what kind of staying power they have if I ever needed to sell them. Does anyone have any thoughts? Are there particular current models that will most likely be more desirable? Any late models that are of particular interest?

Not a deal breaker for me as I buy what I like and don't worry about resale. But I am curious. Oh - and I love the Planet Ocean.

From watching the market over the past year the price of pre-owned Omegas seems to be on the increase. Buying new and then selling quickly, you are going to take a loss.

Since you already have two Rolex's that you are keeping as heirlooms lets use them as an example. If you had bought them in 1980 they would have cost you between two and three hundred pounds, if they were sold today they would be in the high to low thousands depending of course on what models you own

The same can be said of Omega mechanical watches, the quartz period dented Omega's stance in the market. However, old mechanical models bought for hundreds of pounds are selling for thousands in today’s market. The prime mechanical examples are:

• Speedmaster “Moonwatch”
  
• Seamaster 300’s
  
• Constellation’s

I hear you Craig & my two Rolex are both 'heirloom pieces' for my sons.

My next watch is MINE though & it's gonna be the 45mm PO with an orange bezel & a bloack one too to swop over when I feel the nneed for a change.

I figure with the PO being less than half the price I paid for my cSub' I'm getting a bargain anyway & percentage wise I think the long-term depreciation's very similar.

(the loss'd be even less if we bought pre-owned but with the rumoured ceramic PO/price-rise looming the current PO's are making good money & I think the three year warranty is worth a few hundred pounds).

The 45.5 doesn't wear as big as I thought it would. The PO is a great watch, 42 or 45, you can't go wrong.

So continuing on with Op's original question, what are the thoughts about Omega Quartz models now that it looks like Omega will be discontinueing that line? Is there any chance that they may appreciate over the years. Keeping in mind that I am alreadyh over 50.

I have no idea re: future valus but "50 Quartz Omegas"....??
